Old rock out, new plants in, red lava rock down.

A front bed that had gone flat. We took out the existing rock, put in new plants, and finished it with fresh red lava rock for a clean, polished look.

Mid-job on a Boca Raton front bed: the old tan pebble at left, bare soil where it was cleared, and a big golden bromeliad still in its nursery pot waiting to go in.
Mid-job: old pebble on the left, cleared ground in the middle, and a bromeliad waiting to go in.

Taking the old rock out

We started by clearing out what was already there. Pulling old rock is the unglamorous half of a bed like this, and it is the half that decides how the rest turns out. New plants dropped into tired rock never settle properly, and the bed goes back to looking neglected within a season.

The front corner bed before the work: tan river pebble around established crotons, beside a paver walk.
Before: tan river pebble, the crotons already in.
The same front corner finished: the crotons kept, big golden bromeliads planted in front, and the whole bed in fresh red lava rock, Boca Raton.
After: the same corner, the crotons kept and the bromeliads in.

The planting

Big golden bromeliads lead the bed. We picked them because they are low maintenance, and in South Florida that is not a compromise, it is the whole point. A bed that needs fussing over is a bed that looks worse three months after it is planted than it did on day one. These hold their shape and their colour on their own, and the sun only makes them brighter.

Red lava rock to finish

We finished with fresh red lava rock over the whole bed. It is what turns a planting into a finished bed rather than a set of plants in dirt, and the red against the green is what makes it read from the street.

Red lava rock worked in close around a palm trunk and along the base of the house to the downspout.
Rock worked in tight around the palm and along the wall, where it has to look finished up close.

Another South Florida property done. If your beds have gone flat, that is exactly the kind of job this is.
